ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage. (From their website) The ALEKS program is great at rigor, small steps, accountability and targeted assessment and instruction. It does not provide interactive or manipulative introduction to concepts, so it is not a good fit for every student. Students who use ALEKS generally will need access to a parent or teacher comfortable with teaching the math topics a few times a week to clarify stumbling blocks. Here is a link to a tour of ALEKS. ALEKS costs $40 per year when purchased through the school.
